Please come along and take part in the Northern Hairy Wood Ant Survey at Hardcastle Crags. These ants build huge nests on the woodland floor. The aim of the survey is to find as many nests as possible, measure the size of each nest and record the activity of ants, such as foraging trails, trees that they are visiting to farm their aphid colonies. This information will contribute to a long-term study of ants at Hardcastle Crags. We will split up into groups and there will be a prize for the group finding the largest active ant hill! A great day out and a fantastic opportunity to learn more about wood ants up-close.
