Calderdale’s Bats: Biology and Conservation

Talk

9th April

7:15 pm

In association with HSS

Hugh Firman, our Conservation Officer Calderdale MBC, will chat about the various bats in Calderdale, their distribution, abundance, habitat preferences and how bat behaviour changes during the year.

Why do we need more records of bats and what are the traditional surveying techniques?

Hugh will highlight the important work being carried out by the West Yorkshire Bat Group (WYBG).

Andy Mather will talk about bat social calls, which differ from usual echolocation calls and serve an entirely different purpose, revealing information about the kinds of habitats we should seek to conserve in order that bats can contribute to our social purpose.

Anthony Arak will mention the latest hands-free technology for recording bats using Artificial Intelligence, which may well be a game-changer.

We will learn that there is no friendship greater than that of bats. That’s why we often find them hanging around together.
